Cherokee (Aniyvwiya); "Nantahala" derives from the Cherokee for "Land of the Noonday Sun," describing the deep gorge where direct sunlight reaches the valley floor only at midday; Nantahala Town, a historic Cherokee community near the gorge, resisted the 1838 removal under a headman remembered as Oochella, whose people evaded capture by hiding in the gorge's rhododendron thickets; the forest borders the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Displacement & Tenure

Cession: Treaty of Hopewell (1785) established an initial boundary rapidly overrun by settlers; Cession: Treaty of Washington (February 27, 1819, the "Calhoun Treaty") ceded the Little Tennessee and Nantahala watershed, opening present Macon County to white settlement; Cession: Treaty of New Echota (December 29, 1835), signed by the unauthorized Treaty Party without the sanction of Principal Chief John Ross, ceded all remaining Cherokee territory in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, enforced by federal troops in the 1838 Trail of Tears; some Nantahala-area Cherokee evaded removal entirely, becoming part of the ancestral population of today's Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Shadow History

TVA's Fontana Dam (completed 1944, on the Little Tennessee River bordering the forest's Cheoah Ranger District) displaced 1,311 families and relocated 1,047 graves from communities including Judson, Proctor, Bushnell, and Forney, now under Fontana Lake; the "Road to Nowhere," promised to give displaced families access to remaining cemeteries, was abandoned in the 1970s after six of 42 planned miles, ending at a sealed tunnel. Separately, the old-growth Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest survived only by accident: Gennett Lumber Company's 1924 purchase of the tract went unlogged after nearby dam reservoirs flooded its planned rail routes and the Depression collapsed lumber prices, not from any conservation intent, before USFS purchased 13,500 acres from Gennett in 1936.

Ecology

Southern Appalachian cove hardwood and oak-hickory forest, transitioning to northern hardwoods and relict spruce-fir at high elevation; includes Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, a 3,800-acre old-growth cove hardwood stand with trees up to 100 feet tall; the Southern Blue Ridge here holds one of the highest concentrations of locally endemic species in the eastern US, with exceptional salamander diversity.

Hydrology

Little Tennessee River watershed (Tennessee River system); the Nantahala River, regulated by TVA releases from Nantahala Dam through the Nantahala Gorge, is a major tributary; Fontana Lake, formed by the 1944 TVA Fontana Dam, borders the forest's Cheoah Ranger District.
